Although supervision of young children is the primary prevention strategy, inevitable lapses make supervision alone insufficient. Additional layers of protection can secure the pool area, and/or delay the child from entering water unsupervised. The following are components to consider:

- Staying away from drains: the suction in big drains can pull on hair and keep you underwater
