  • Poor swimming skills, or over-estimation of swimming ability
  • Swimming alone
  • Onset of fatigue, distress or heat/sun overexposure
  • Failure to wear lifejacket during boating outings
  • Beach conditions, such as rip currents
  • Misjudgment of water depth or sudden drop-offs
  • Underlying medical condition, such as seizure disorder
  • Unaware of hazards or conditions of natural water settings
  • Disregard for importance of lifeguard coverage, water safety signs/symbols and boating regulations
  • Availability of rescue equipment and knowledge of proper use
  • Use of alcohol or other substances that impair judgment and compromise safety
  • Likely to engage in risky behavior around water
