- Poor swimming skills, or over-estimation of swimming ability
- Swimming alone
- Onset of fatigue, distress or heat/sun overexposure
- Failure to wear lifejacket during boating outings
- Beach conditions, such as rip currents
- Misjudgment of water depth or sudden drop-offs
- Underlying medical condition, such as seizure disorder
- Unaware of hazards or conditions of natural water settings
- Disregard for importance of lifeguard coverage, water safety signs/symbols and boating regulations
- Availability of rescue equipment and knowledge of proper use
- Use of alcohol or other substances that impair judgment and compromise safety
- Likely to engage in risky behavior around water
